The Bowen Technique

The late Mr. Tom Bowen developed the Bowen Technique in Australia. It is a unique form of neuromuscular repatterning. The technique is gentle, noninvasive, and can be performed through clothing. Despite its gentleness, it is an extremely effective form of physical therapy.
Benefits Include:

  • Improvement in muscle strength and tension levels
  • Relief from injuries from sports, accidents and lifestyle, even if injury occurred some time ago
  • Communication between muscles, nerves and lymph channels can be improved
  • Circulation can be increased, promoting tissue healing
  • Proper alignment of the spine can be achieved, relieving stress and strain on joints and muscles
  • Relaxation and stress reduction

Bowen Technique is completely safe and appropriate for everyone from the highly trained athlete to newborns, pregnant women, elderly and the chronically ill. It can help with all sorts of physical injuries and pain conditions, as well as with metabolic problems, breathing problems, chest congestion, digestive problems, toothaches and face pain, jaw alignment problems, swelling, bruising, headaches, menstrual cramps, surgery recovery, energy and sleep.

A Bowen treatment consists of a series of gentle rolling movements on the muscles, performed in very specific locations. These stimulations activate changes that the body must respond to, so a few minutes’ pause is observed to allow the changes to be integrated. A pattern of movements and pauses continues throughout the treatment. The treatment will also consist of assessment of the balance in muscle contraction, strength, and evaluation of posture problems caused by muscle tension. Increasing joint range of motion is often a benefit of the treatment.

The rhythm is soothing, and many patients fall asleep at least once during the session. Benefits are usually apparent within a few sessions, even when long-standing conditions are being treated. Bowen results are lasting and profound.

Dr. Allen has been treating patients with the Bowen technique since 1993 and helped teach the technique for several years. She has extensive training in several other forms of physical therapy which help complement her ability to help patients improve more quickly. She is quite skilled in assessment of acute and chronic injuries and in choosing the best combination of treatments to achieve the quickest relief for the patient’s suffering.
Another fully trained Bowen therapist has recently been added to the practitioners at Triangolo Family Clinic, to help Dr. Allen to meet the increasing demand for this wonderful treatment.
